Curriculum – “Anton Maria Abbatini” Schola Contorum
It was founded in 1931 by Mons. Rolando Magnani,with the particular objet to carry out a most solemn and professional music service for the liturgical celebration for the cathedral of Città di Castello, following the desire of the Blessed Carlo Liviero, bishop of the diocese at that time. In addition to this it want to value and spread both sacred and profane choral music by the performance of concerts that range from gregorian, renaissance, baroque and romantique music to the contemporary one.
Among the most interesting scores that it performed we can mention: the Requiem by G. Faurè (2013), the Magnificat by J.S. Bach (2014), the Mess for the Coronation by W.A. Mozart (2015),the Requiem op. 9 by M. Duruflè (2016), the Missa Solemnis by S. Lancen (2016), the Magnificat by J. Rutter (2017), the Requiem by Z. Lukas (2018), the absolute premiere of the Missa Brevis by Roberto Tofi in the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the dedication of Pisa Cathedral (2018), the Messe des Jesuites de Pekin by Charles d’Ambleville and Joseph Marie Amiot during the Festival of Nations (2019) and the Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeilo (2019). We also mention concerts dedicated to the music of the Queen and De Andrè exhecuted in the occasion of the opening of the new Library of Città di Castello in 2019.
The choir has cooperated with: the Festival of the Nations of Città di Castello, the Philarmonic Orchestra of Rome, the Chamber Orchestra of the “F. Morlacchi” Conservatory of Perugia, the Simposio Strumentale (brass quartet and organ), the OIDA Orchestra (Orchestra Instabile di Arezzo), the “Le Baroque Nomade . XVIII-21” Ensemble of Paris, the “L. Mori” Camerata, the “G. Rossini” Symphonyc Orchestra of Pesaro, the Gubbio municipal band, the “G.Puccini” Philarmonic of Città di Castello and the Music Chapel of the Saint Francis Papal Basilica of Assisi. In addition to this the Schola Cantorum cooperated with the writer Antonio Moresco by recording the Oremus by U. Sisask as sound track of the movie “La Lucina” (2016). In 2014 it executed the absolute premiere of the opera “Preludio al Cantico” at the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi with che cooperation of father Alessandro Giacomo Brustenghi and the Master Nicola Piovani.
Regarding the liturgical context, the choir is particularly interested in the execution of new works with the aim to enrich the music heritage that has to be intended to the practical use, above all during local festivities. The Missa Sanctorum Floridi et Amantii (for solos, choir, orchestra) committed by Piero Caraba in the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the foundation (2011), the “Primi Vespri per la Solennità della Beata Vergine Maria Madre della Grazia Divina” set to music by Father Giuseppe Magrino (2013) and a Missa Brevis by the composer RobertoTofi (2018). In 2014 the Schola Cantorum won the first prize at the 7th National Contest for Liturgic Choir “D. Maffeis” that took place in Gazzaniga.
The Schola Cantorum is composed by 30 singers and it is directed by master Alessandro Bianconi with the help of the vocal coach Emanuela Agatoni.
