In 1986, Ms. Anna Sinigaglia, a member of the Evangelical Baptist Church of Bari, together with brothers and sisters from various Christian denominations (Church of Santa Scolastica Bari, Christian Evangelical Baptist Church, Christian Church of Christ), gave birth to first Ecumenical Choir in Italy in order to manifest, through song, the Christian aspiration to the Unity of the Church and the community commitment to break down the barriers of indifference, distrust and any other hatred between the brothers.
Since 2002, the Choir has assumed its current name in honor of its founder who died in October and, today under the artistic direction of Soprano Mariella Gernone, the main activity of the Choir consists in animating the ecumenical church services in the Bari-Bitonto Diocese, with a repertoire that includes polyphonic and solo compositions, in different languages, of the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish tradition.
Key point is the annual animation of the meetings in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, but for 33 years the Ecumenical Choir has been carrying out an intense artistic activity of national and international scope, participating in interreligious meetings and animating various events such as the Cult of Pentecost at the Evangelical Baptist Church of Bari, broadcast in Euro-vision by RAI 2 under the heading Protestantesimo, the Ecumenical Service of Nine Lessons and Christmas Carols for the Anglo-Italian Association “Adele Gallesi” of Bari.
He also performs with concerts in Bari, La Spezia, Trieste; in Graz (Austria) for the European Ecumenical Conference; in 2004 in Bari for the National Conference of Diocesan Delegates for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue; in 2010 at the Church of San Francescuccio in Assisi participating in the Pilgrimage of Peace “On the Footsteps of Francis; in 2012 from the Polytechnic of Bari, in videoconference with Brussels for the meeting “Together for Europe” and other regional and national ecumenical meetings.
In 2015, on the occasion of the participation in the International Conference “Christians in the Middle East: what future?” Organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome, he animated the Prayer of Peace held in the Papal Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari, in the presence of the Archbishop metropolitan Francesco Cacucci, of the highest representatives of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus and Antioch and of the highest regional and national civil and military authorities. In September 2017, on the occasion of the closure of the year dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Martin Luther Protestant Reformation, the Choir performed a commemorative concert with the performance of the most significant Choirs of J. S. Bach.
On 7 July 2018, on the occasion of the event “May you be peace, Christians together for the Middle East” the Ecumenical Choir of Bari animated the ecumenical celebration presided over by Pope Francis and the leaders of the Middle Eastern Christian Churches with the other diocesan choirs.
